[OUTDATED] Choose Starting Era for Humankind
#1
NOTE: This mod was mostly broken by the 2022-01-20 patch. The patch broke the ability to choose a starting culture with the starting era. We are no longer modding this game, so do not expect an update in the foreseeable future.

This mod allows you to choose the starting era in the game pace settings of Humankind. The game will have the standard number of turns for the game pace you selected (e.g. Normal will be 300 turns). This is a UI-enabled developer feature of the game (thanks developers!).

All players will need to select a culture before beginning the game. AI players will be assigned a culture based on the arbitrary order of cultures for that era, but you can change their culture if you want to.

To select a culture for yourself and AIs click the same button you would to change faction color, icon, banner ornaments, and AI persona.

If you have the Allow Duplicate Cultures Mod installed and enabled, you will be able to select duplicate starting cultures as well, otherwise, choosing a culture that is already assigned to another player will swap your cultures. If you do not select cultures, they will be automatically assigned based on the arbitrary list order.

If you choose the Ancient era through the Industrial era, you will only receive military units at the beginning. You will also have 0 influence. However, you will be able to establish one outpost even though your influence is 0. The eras after that include at least one settler unit.

All techs from previous eras are automatically researched for all players.

City production and cash flow are far less than that of a capitol city settled in the Ancient era. Basically, the city you settle will be similar to a city you settled in the selected era if you were playing a game you began in the Ancient era.

Change Notes:
Version 1.0.0.2 (October 16, 2021):
Fixed another bug that caused the player slot culture option to not save without also having "Allow Duplicate Cultures" mod installed.

Version 1.0.0.1 (October 13, 2021):
Fixed a bug that caused the player slot options to not work without also having "Allow Duplicate Cultures" mod installed.

hi aom! i manually installed the dll, launched twice and was able to get it working but the competitors settings button doesn't work here, so i was assigned the default? factions and i ccould only select the remaining personas through their left right scrolling buttons < >

could this be related to system language settings? my game is in english but system is spanish

scroll selection at pace menu works fine though, did a couple of quick tests and i got assyrians and australians

many thanks for sharing your work!

Hi NombreyApellido, thank you for the feedback. To ensure I understand you correctly, could you post a screenshot of the issue you're facing?

in red the competitor settings button that aren't working on my end, so i can't choose either my faction nor avatar enemies that way... for the latter, i can use the horizontal scroll right below the pictures, that looks like this: < Avatar Name >

on the pace menu, the scrolling selection for the era does work though

The problem has been identified, and it's a bug. If you have duplicate cultures installed, you will be able to see the dropdowns regardless of whether you have it selected for the game you're starting or not. However, if you do not have duplicate cultures installed, the dropdowns will not function. The Choose Starting Era mod has been updated to fix this problem (please redownload). Thank you again for providing information!

further testing has shown that culture selection isn't "sticky" and gets changed after clicking "done" in the slot settings. it seems to be defaulting to a specific distribution, that is the list order as shown in the ui (ie player gets assyrians, slot 8 gets olmecs for ancient era)

Hi NombreyApellido, thank you for the report. The issue was the same one that caused persona dropdown problems. The mod has been updated so that you can pick the culture of all players even if the Allow Duplicate Cultures mod is not enabled in your game. After reviewing the rest of the code in this mod, no more problems like this are present, so (hopefully) this should be the last problem you encounter with the mod. Please redownload the fixed version.
